Keith Anderson
Keith Anderson started working with paper as an art form in 1988. Experimenting with the natural substances of the earth - plant fibers, wood, stones and natural dyes - he developed a unique and evocative expression that captures the imagination. Under his hands, recycled paper is reborn as a living canvas using a casting and hardening process that he has perfected and made his own.
The imprinted images that from through Keith's work are, for the most part, based on the ancient art of petroglyphs and symbolize for him the enduring quality of human expression. These simple drawings speak of the earth and of the spirit of the indigenous people who live close to it. Keith's journey has taken him from contractor to artist, from spiritual counselor to musician, and from North America to Europe and Africa. However, it was not until he discovered the range and flexibility of paper that his artistic expression truly found its voice.
Keith's work is showcased in many private collections. He also teaches paper sculpting and tours extensively in the western United States. View his works...
Artist's Viewpoint
I am drawn to paper as a art form because of its infinite ability to capture texture, color and shape. My paper sculpting process results in rock-like background for my images, landscapes and abstracts. It looks hard and heavy but, in fact, is very light and strong. Illusion and substance presented on the same surface.
I am greatly influenced by the first artists: men and women who recorded ancient worlds using simple tools and images. I stand in awe of the creative genius that turned caves into cathedrals. It is these images and lost messages that form the theme for much of my work.
