Kisii Stone

Kenya's soapstone (Kisii) is mined in the highlands of the Kisii District in Western Kenya which borders on Lake Victoria. The inhabitants of Kisii are known as the Abagusii tribe. A small number of  Abagusii in the village of Tabaka have over the years developed skills selecting raw stones with inherently beautiful hues and tones which varies in color from Rose to White.  The stone is hand carved by expert carvers into a variety of art forms, such as sculptures, tableware, animals, chess sets and much more.  Once carved, the crafts people smooth rough edges with sandpaper dipped in water and paint African motifs with etched accents.

Soapstone can be dyed and etched by hand or left in its natural color.  Traditionally clear wax is applied to each soapstone item to bring out a lustrous finish.  All the pieces are soothing to the touch, emit warmth, and refine a room as only a finely handcrafted natural earth product can do.

Please call first before placing an order.
